Elf on the Shelf Ideas

Updated December 2024

Hey there!

If you are reading this blog post about the Elf on the Shelf ideas, then you may already know about the holiday tradition that comes around the month of December.

Each family is different and each house their own rules. In our home our Christmas tree is the beacon for the elves to come. That way I don't have to stress out for 25 days of moving the elf or elves.

2 weeks of elf moving is more than enough for me. You do you what works best for your family. Sincerely, I didn't like the idea of a mischievous elf making a mess in my home and having to clean that up. The story that comes with the elf doesn't make them mischievous but sincerely you have seen some of those creative ideas?

***Also note before I continue to my list YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO "ALL OUT". If your children are like mine they like the elf. If you are  like my friend's child, they found it creepy. And I was able to get their elf.

Ours helps decorate the house and plays hide and seek basically.  We use what we have on hand or plan to have on hand.  Thank you, dollar store and clearance sections.

Use what you have.

These bows came from the dollar store and some didn’t have the sticky backing to it. I just added tape.

Wall climbing?

Same dollar store bows used for a different picture.

An extra candy cane and a flower vase.

Sock Hop

Easiest for me (since we hang 6) is a sock hop for the elf.

Cake or Cookies just enjoy whatever you do.

Remember to clean your work area. Dust off that cake mold and wash it before you start baking.

Sincerely Clean it before and after usage.

How much elf dust do you need in the goods?

Placement does matter. It could take things from G to rated R.

Gallery below has additional photos from the past elf shenanigans.

Keep it Simple and Mess Free

Save your lipstick, dry erase marker does the trick on mirrors. This photo was taken after toddler play time in the bathroom.

My favorite is to decorate the common room door. Think bathroom or closet… wrap the front of the door with the left-over wrapping paper. Or if you really want to get its own paper for the door. When you take it down remember to recycle it.

If you choose to choose to adopt an elf, may you and your family enjoy.  I will enjoy the moment while it lasts. Check out some photos of things we have done below.
